Niki Lauda Sculpture by Paul Oz
Niki Lauda was an iconic figure in Formula 1, renowned not only for his exceptional driving skills and unwavering commitment to motorsport but also for his remarkable character. Paul Oz remarked, “Creating a life-size memorial for such a legendary individual was a daunting task, especially receiving the call about his passing on the same day. Just two weeks later, as I drove back from McLaren HQ with Niki's race suit and helmet, the pressure was immense, but it added a crucial layer of authenticity to the project.”
The memorial honors Niki's third world title with McLaren, secured in a thrilling finish at Estoril, where he narrowly bested Prost by just half a point. The sculpture captures a moment of camaraderie, depicting Prost gesturing Niki onto the podium while creatively replacing Niki’s usual cap with his recognizable Parmalat red one and having him hold his helmet—an emblem of a true driver. This dynamic pose, with Niki taking a half step forward, enhances the energy of the piece.
Unveiled at McLaren on the third anniversary of Niki's passing in May 2022, limited editions of the memorial are available in bronze: life-size upon approval.
