The Ford GT40 Mk IV was conceived and built specifically to challenge Ferrari and the other European marques that had dominated endurance racing throughout the 1960s.

Twelve chassis were constructed by Michigan-based Kar Kraft for Shelby American, Inc., each powered by a 427 cubic-inch engine. The program achieved its ultimate goal at the 1967 24 Hours of Le Mans, when Dan Gurney and A.J. Foyt drove the No. 1 Ford GT40 Mk IV, chassis J-6, to victory over the Ferrari 330 P4 of Ludovico Scarfiotti and Mike Parkes.
