After rising through the ranks of karting and junior formulas, and making a strong impression during his initial stint in International Formula 3000, Juan Pablo Montoya was invited to test with the Williams Formula 1 team in 1998. His performance during the test stood out, earning him serious consideration for a future race seat.

Montoya then transitioned to IndyCar, where he made an immediate impact—winning the championship in his rookie season in 1999, followed by a stunning victory at the Indianapolis 500 on his first attempt in 2000. His rapid success in the United States convinced Williams to bring him into Formula 1 full-time in 2001.
