In 2020 Tsunoda, the 2018 Japanese F4 Champion, was driving for Carlin in F2 and with 3 wins, finished 3rd in the Championship.

Tsunoda had a strong rookie season in 2021 with 7 top-ten finishes, one of those being a well-earned 9th place at the Bahrain GP, his debut race. He would score a brilliant 4th place finish at the final race of the season in Abu Dhabi, and was duly named the FIA ROTY.
