1997 Jacques Villeneuve World Championship Used Rothmans Williams Renault Bell Dominator F1 Helmet
Straight from Jacques Villeneuve's personal collection, this is a rare opportunity to add an original race-used and signed 1997 World Champion Jacques Villeneuve Bell Dominator helmet to your collection.
This helmet, in Jacques' iconic colors, comes with radio still attached and is signed in silver marker on the visor with the inscription "World Champ 97".
This helmet, showing good use, was first used in pre-season testing and then at various races throughout the season. It has been photo-matched to the Australian GP where Villeneuve started the season with a bang by putting his Williams Renault FW19 on pole but was ultimately disqualified due to a collision. Then, the helmet was spotted again in the second round of the championship, the Brazilian GP, where Villeneuve once again grabbed pole, recorded the fastest lap and went on to win his first race of the season. The helmet was last used in the 3rd race of the season where Villeneuve won again in Argentina.
The 1997 season was an action-packed, season long dual between Villeneuve and his rival, Michael Schumacher. Going into the infamous season finale in Jerez, Portugal, Villeneuve had seven wins to Schumacher's five, yet trailed Michael by a single point.
The final race had lots of hype surrounding it with Schumacher's teammate threatening to do anything to spoil Villeneuve's race to ensure Schumacher was champion. On qualifying day Villeneuve posted a time of 1:21.072, which was then promptly matched by Schumacher. Then later in the session Villeneuve's teammate, Heinz-Harald Frentzen, posted the exact 1:21.072 time as well! Rules dictated that whoever posted the time first would start ahead, so Villeneuve was on pole, Schumacher in the second grid spot and Frentzen third.
Michael bested Jacques off the line and it wasn't until later in the race, by lap 48, that Villeneuve was close enough to make the move inside Schumacher at the Dry Sack curve. Villeneuve was already ahead when Schumacher appeared to drive into the side of Villeneuve, resulting in Schumacher's car coming to a halt while Villeneuve was able to continue and finish the race as World Champion. Schumacher was found by the race officials to have deliberately rammed his car into Villeneuve's and, as a result, had his points from the season wiped out after the race. Oddly enough, even in this tightly contested season, Villeneuve and Schumacher never shared a podium together.
The Jerez finale stayed in the mind of many fans for a long time, and when F1 polled fans in 2020 which race to replay as the 2020 F1 season was delayed due to the pandemic restrictions... the fans chose the 1997 season finale in Jerez.
Don't miss out on this rare opportunity to buy the 1997 World Champion's helmet, which was also Williams last Drivers' & Constructors' Championship year, not to mention that Villeneuve is Canada's only F1 World Champion.
This helmet comes in its original Bell helmet bag and is accompanied by a Certificate Of Authenticity.
