This trophy commemorates David Empringham’s 1996 Indy Lights Championship—a milestone in the career of one of Canada’s most accomplished racing drivers. Empringham’s accolades include two Toyota Atlantic Championships, the 1996 Indy Lights title, and two Continental Tire SportsCar Challenge championships.
Empringham launched his racing career in 1987 in the Formula 2000 Series before progressing to the GM Motorsport Series. By 1992, he had committed to full-time competition in the Toyota Atlantic Championship, capturing consecutive titles in 1993 and 1994. In 1996, he took the next step by joining the Player's/Forsythe Racing Team in the Indy Lights Series—going head-to-head with future IndyCar greats like Hélio Castroneves, Tony Kanaan, and Greg Ray.
That year, Empringham notched three race wins, including a standout performance at Michigan Speedway, where he recorded the fastest lap of the series at the time. Thanks to his consistent results and dominant driving, Empringham clinched the 1996 Indy Lights Championship.
