1993 Michael Andretti Signed Italian GP 'Only F1 Podium' Race Used Mclaren F1 Suit

The suit has been photo matched to being used during the Italian Grand Prix, which happens to be Michael's first and only F1 podium. He finished in 3rd, and shared the podium with Jean Alesi in 2nd, and Damon Hill in 1st. Despite his best finish of the season this was to be Andretti's last race in Formula 1.

As of 2025, Andretti’s podium finish remains the last for an American driver in Formula One, making this suit the final podium suit worn by an American driver.

At the time, Andretti was at the peak of his career, having just won the 1991 IndyCar Championship. He was invited to test with McLaren at the end of that year, driving a Honda-powered MP4/5B at the Autódromo do Estoril in Portugal. His performance impressed McLaren’s management, who offered him a contract for the 1993 Formula One season once his agreement with Newman/Haas IndyCar expired.

Unfortunately, by the time Andretti joined, Formula One regulations had changed significantly, and McLaren had switched to a new engine supplier. Andretti found the McLaren MP4/8 cars he was to drive were a completely different machine to the ones he used in testing. He also found that the technology had moved on and had trouble getting to grips with many of the advances made to the cars. All of this coupled with the new team’s Ford engines being vastly underpowered to most other teams on the grid made Andretti’s move to Formula 1 and ill-fated one.

Despite these obstacles, Andretti persevered, scoring points in five of the six races he finished. His best result came at the Italian Grand Prix, where he claimed third place. Soon after, he and McLaren mutually agreed to part ways. This very suit comes from that Italian Grand Prix podium — the last podium appearance by an American driver in Formula One to this day.

A fantastic, piece of history, a notable suit for F1 collectors, Andretti collectors, American F1 driver collectors and McLaren collectors.

The suit comes with a Certificate of Authenticity.
