Simpson helmet used by IndyCar veteran Tony Bettenhausen Jr. during the 1991 CART IndyCar Championship season. The youngest member of the Bettenhausen racing family, Tony started racing in stock and sprint cars before switching to open-wheel racing in 1979. Bettenhausen Jr. then took up team ownership in 1986. A veteran of eleven Indianapolis 500's, with a best finish of 7th in 1981, Tony Jr. last competed in the Indianapolis 500 as a driver in 1993. Sadly Bettenhausen Jr. along with his wife were tragically killed in a plane crash in 2000.
The helmet was used by Bettenhausen Jr., driving a Penske Chevrolet for his own Bettenhausen Racing organization in the 1991 season. The base color is white and has an orange, black-edged, five-pointed ‘star-like' design running around the eye-port with the points extending around and over the top of the helmet. Bettenhausen Jr’s, ‘Tony B’ name is on both sides in black. On the top front, above the visor, is a team sponsor Amax decal. The helmet also has an Amax visor strip. The helmet retains its original USAC tech sticker from the Indy 500 that season.
The helmet comes with a Certificate Of Authenticity.
