1988 Derek Daly Signed 24 Hrs of Le Mans Race Used Silk Cut Jaguar Sportscar Suit, Helmet + More
This 1988 Jaguar Silk Cut Package includes Derek Daly's open face helmet, race worn suit, team shirt, winter jacket, kit bag plus championship t-shirt.
In '88 the Jaguar team made history winning the famous Le Mans 24 hour race for the first time since 1957. The race was won by the #2 team car with Porsche finishing second and third. In 4th place was the #22 entry of Derek Daly, Kevin Cogan and Larry Perkins.
Derek Daly started his open wheel racing career in the European Formula Two Championship in 1977. In 1978 and 1979, he competed in both F2 and F1, finishing third in the F2 championship in both seasons. His best year in F1 was 1980, when he scored two 4th place finishes and finished 11th in the Drivers' Championship.
From 1982 to 1989 Daly drove in the CART Series. His CART record stands at 66 races, including every Indianapolis 500 from 1983 to 1989, with the exception of 1986. He scored 21 top-ten finishes, including a 3rd place podium finish at Milwaukee in 1987. In September 1984 he was nearly killed in a horrible crash in the Detroit Grand Prix 200. The front end of his car was sheared off and he suffered multiple injuries including a crushed left ankle, double compound fractures to his left tibia and fibula, fractured left hip socket, severely fractured pelvis, several broken left side ribs, a broken left hand, 3rd degree burns to the left arm, dislocated right foot and ankle, deep abrasions and soft tissue damage to his right heel, and internal bleeding.
In 1988 Daly had success in Sportscar racing while driving the Silk Cut Jaguar to a 4th place finish in the 24 Hours of Le Mans. Also, Daly notably won the 12 Hours of Sebring in 1990 and 1991 driving a Nissan GTP ZX-Turbo. In 1990, he had the unusual distinction of driving both the first and second-placed cars as he was driving stints in two cars.
Daly then went on to a very successful career in Motorsports as a broadcaster and commentator. His son Conor currently driver in the IndyCar series.
The racing suit and helmet were worn by Derek Daly while driving in the 1988 24 Hours of Le Mans with the Silk Cut Jaguar team. The suit and helmet have both been signed by him in black marker pen. All the items in the lot are in great condition and come directly from his personal collection.
