Derek Daly started his open wheel in the European Formula Two Championship in 1977. In 1978 and 1979, he competed in both F2 and F1, finishing third in the F2 championship in both seasons. His best year in F1 was 1980, when he scored two 4th place finishes and finished 11th in the Drivers' Championship.

In 1982 to 1989 he drove in the CART series. His CART record stand at 66 races, including each Indianapolis 500 from 1983 to 1989, except for 1986. He had 21 top ten finishes, including one podium finish a 3rd position, at Milwaukee in 1987. In September 1984 he was nearly killed in a horrible crash in the Detroit Grand Prix 200. The front end of his car was sheared off and he suffered multiple injuries including a crushed left ankle, double compound fracture to the left tibia and fibula, fractured left hip socket, severely fractured pelvis, several broken left side ribs, broken left hand, 3rd degree burns to the left arm, dislocated right foot and ankle, deep abrasions and soft tissue to right heel, and internal bleeding. This suit, from 1987 his first full season back after his accident, was worn at the Indy 500.

Daly had success in Sportswear racing in 1988 driving the Silk Cut Jaguar to a 4th place finish in Le Mans 24 hours. Daly notably won the 12 Hours of Sebring in 1990 and 1991 driving a Nissan GTP ZX-Turbo. In 1990, he had the unusual distinction of driving both the first and second-placed cars as he was driving stints in two cars.

Daly then went on to a very successful career in Motorsports as a broadcaster and commentator. His son Connor currently drivers in the IndyCar series.

The suit is signed by Daly and comes from his personal collection. A Certificate of Authenticity is included.
