Bell XFM1 helmet painted by the famous helmet painter Doug Eyre and worn by Tommy Byrne in 1983 during the Formula 3 Championship and in the Monaco race, while driving for Eddie Jordan Racing. In the XXV Formula3 Prix de Monte Carlo, Byrne both qualified and finished in 3rd place in his Ralt RT3-Toyota.

Thomas Byrne is a former racing driver from Ireland. He participated in two Formula One Grands Prix in 1982 with the Theodore team, failing to qualify for another three due to poor equipment. Byrne came up through the ranks and is famous for replacing Ayrton Senna and winning in his car, forcing the future World Champion to come back from Brazil to compete again in the UK. Byrne won the 1982 British Formula 3 Championship, even though he missed some races while he competed in Formula One. At that time, he also tested a McLaren MP4/1 Formula One car in October 1982 and was lighting quick against Marlboro-backed Spirit Racing's European F2 drivers like Stefan Johansson and Thierry Boutsen. In 1983 he raced in European Formula 3 netting 4 podiums, two of them being wins. Byrne moved to the United States and began racing in the American Racing Series in 1986, where he won ten races in 55 starts.

He co-authored a book with Mark Hughes which was released in the UK on the 8th of August, 2008, titled Crashed and Byrned: The Greatest Racing Driver You Never Saw. This was later followed by a movie on his life called Crash and Byrne. The book and movie recounts Byrne's rapid rise in British Formula Ford and F3 and his equally rapid exit from Formula 1 racing due to an unfortunate set of circumstances such as being a wild man and partier.
