1982 Gilles Villeneuve San Marino GP, South Africa GP, Brazil GP Race Used Scuderia Ferrari F1 Helmet
Gilles Villeneuve, father of IndyCar and F1 Champion Jacques Villeneuve, is still celebrated as one of the most electrifying drivers in motorsport history. Known for his fearless, all-out driving style, Gilles earned the admiration of fellow competitors and fans alike. More than forty years after his tragic passing, his legacy endures, and he remains widely regarded as one of Formula 1’s all-time greats.
This helmet was one of two helmets made for him in 1982. He used one for qualifying, practice and reserved this one for races. It was used 3 of the 4 races, first being spotted in winter tests, then seen used in the opening race of the year in South Africa, he qualified 3rd but he only completed 6 laps of the race. It was used again in Brazil where he again qualified well (2nd) and suffered another DNF 29 laps in. The helmet was finally used at the San Marino Grand Prix, where Villeneuve looked set to win the race. With no threat from any other teams, Ferrari appeared certain to finish 1-2. However, his teammate Didier Pironi ignored the instruction to hold position and passed a deliberately slowing Villeneuve at a point where he could no longer reclaim the lead. As a result, Villeneuve was denied what many felt was his rightful victory.
This helmet, from Villeneuve’s final completed race and very last podium, is an absolutely exceptional piece of Villeneuve, Ferrari and Formula 1 history. A true grail of the F1 collecting world.
The helmet is fully authenticated, photo matched and comes with a Certificate of Authenticity.
