1975 Mark Donohue Race Used First National City Bank Team F1 Suit
Mark Donohue was a celebrated race car driver and engineer, renowned for his technical expertise especially in the understanding of car set up and his exceptional talent behind the wheel. He earned a reputation as one of the most versatile and intelligent racers of his era, achieving major victories across multiple disciplines. Donohue is perhaps best remembered for his triumphs at the 1969 24 Hours of Daytona and the 1972 Indianapolis 500.
He made his Indy 500 debut in 1969 with Penske Racing, finishing seventh and earning Rookie of the Year honors. He returned each year, placing second in 1970, 25th in 1971, and claiming a landmark victory in 1972—the first Indy 500 win for team owner Roger Penske.
Between 1968 and 1971, Donohue also competed in NASCAR's Grand American and pony car divisions. In the 1972–1973 Winston Cup season, he piloted an AMC Matador for Penske Racing, winning the season opener at Riverside International Raceway. This marked Penske’s first NASCAR victory and remains notable as the last time a road course specialist (non-full-time driver) has won a Winston Cup road race.
Donohue’s career extended to Formula 1, where he raced in 1971 with Penske/K.F. White Racing, in 1974 with Penske Cars, and in 1975 for the First National City Bank Team. His best F1 result came in his rookie year, with a podium finish at the 1971 Canadian Grand Prix. Tragically, Donohue’s life was cut short in 1975. Midway through the season, after Penske switched from the underperforming PC1 to the March 751, Donohue suffered a high-speed crash during a practice session for the Austrian Grand Prix. A tire failure caused him to lose control, sending the car into the catch fencing at Turn 1. Though initially appearing to have only minor injuries, his head had struck either a catch fence post or the frame of a billboard. He developed a worsening headache and was hospitalized the next day in Graz, where he fell into a coma and passed away due to a cerebral hemorrhage. A track marshal was also killed in the accident from debris.
Mark Donohue remains one of the great legends lost during Formula 1's most dangerous era. His brilliant mind, fearless driving, and pioneering spirit left an indelible mark on motorsport. This suit commemorates the remarkable career and legacy of a racing icon taken far too soon.
