1976 Gilles Villeneuve Griffin Clubman Formula Atlantic F1 Paint Protoytype Helmet
A one-of-a-kind Griffin helmet that Gilles Villeneuve wore during the 1976 Formula Atlantic season, including at Road Atlanta.
Gilles Villeneuve originally sent this helmet to California to be painted with a new design, marking the beginning of the color scheme he would keep for the rest of his career. Although he wasn’t satisfied with the original color combination, he soon revised it—opting for a similar design with a darker navy blue and red, a design that endured and remained a constant throughout his career.
In an interview with Jacques Villeneuve Sr (Gilles' brother) in May 28, 2025
"We always wonder where that helmet went! I can confirm that this was one of Gilles' helmets, both he and I wore the same Griffin helmet we bought from England. This helmet was once green (when he ran for Ski-Roule) and then he painted it blue for Direct Film. When it looked like he was heading to Formula One, he wanted his own design., so Joann drew up a sketch and sent it off with his helmet to be painted. It came back, but not exactly as he wanted, but you can see the familiar design that he later used. I don't remember exactly when I first saw it, and there is nobody left who can confirm it. But I know that this is Gilles' helmet."
The helmet was in the possession for longtime Villeneuve friend, mentor and manager, Gaston Parent. Upon his death it was sold to Michel Perrier of Saint Lambert by Parent's widow. It was presented to Jacques Villeneuve Sr. for authentication, he stated that indeed it was Gilles' helmet from 1976.
An absolutely rare and singular piece of Gilles Villeneuve memorabilia and a once in a lifetime opportunity for it to become a part of your collection.
The helmet comes with Certificate of Authenticity.
