Johnny Boyd, an early American racer, competed in the USAC Champ Car series from 1954 to 1966, amassing 56 starts and participating in the Indy 500 twelve times. Boyd made his first appearance at the Indianapolis 500 in 1955, finishing 29th after being involved in the accident that claimed the life of the legendary Bill Vukovich. Boyd’s best finish in the 500 came in 1959 when he led 18 laps and finished 3rd. Over his twelve Indy 500 entries, he finished in the Top 10 five times. These Indy 500 entries between 1950 and 1960 were also considered F1 World Championship events, as the race was part of the FIA World Championship series.
