The wait might soon be over for Ferrari.
The red Italians have gotten off to a fast start in this Formula One season, winning the season-opening race in Bahrain and scoring four of the six podiums. Ferrari drivers Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz are 1-2 in the standings, and they are bidding to become the first Ferrari pair to finish in those positions since Michael Schumacher and Rubens Barrichello in 2004.
Leclerc leads his teammate after two races, 45-33, with reigning world champion Max Verstappen, the winner of last weekend's race in Saudi Arabi, third with 25 points. Mercedes has George Russell and seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton in the fourth and fifth positions, respectively, with 22 and 16 points.
Leclerc is trying to become Ferrari's first world champion since Kimi Raikkonen in 2007 and its 16th such champion in all. The others: Alberto Ascari (1952, 1953), Juan Manuel Fangio (1956), Mike Hawthorn (1958), Phil Hill (1961), John Surtees (1964), Niki Lauda (1975, 1977), Jody Scheckter (1979) and Michael Schumacher (2000, 2001, 2002, 2003 and 2004).
