Marco Andretti continues to build on the famous Andretti family racing legacy this week by winning the pole for Sunday’s Indianapolis 500 at Indianapolis Motor Speedway. The pole was the first for the third-generation driver at IMS and the first at the Speedway for the family since Mario Andretti won the last of his three Indy poles in 1987. Surprisingly, Michael Andretti never won a pole at IMS in his 16 starts there despite leading a total 431 race laps, No. 11 all-time, and the most by a non-winner.
This helmet, worn by Marco in the 2008 race at Sonoma, was part of a special promotion for that year’s Star Wars creation “The Clone Wars.” Marco donned a “Star Wars Storm Trooper” uniform-style helmet and fire suit to coincide with the car’s paint scheme.
This special helmet has all of the usual features that appear on Andretti family helmets, including the wide center chevron stripe running over the top and the “Stars and Stripes” around the bottom. But instead of being in silver, as is the family’s tradition, the helmet is done in an all-white background – a rarity to be sure. Of course, the Andretti surname is scripted on both sides.
Marco has personally signed this helmet and has included his No. 26 as well. He has also race documented and dated the helmet which includes INDYCAR technical inspection stickers. Like all Hall of Fame Collection pieces, the helmet comes with a full Certificate Of Authenticity.
