Hall of Fame Collection is proud to announce the sale of the 1982 Gilles Villeneuve Last Podium and Last Race San Marino Grand Prix Race Used Scuderia Ferrari Formula 1 Helmet. The sale shattered the all-time record for a Formula 1 helmet, closing at $1.25 million USD. We are incredibly proud to have played a part in this historic moment for motorsport memorabilia.
The helmet pictured was one of two new helmets produced for Villeneuve for the 1982 season. One was used during practice and qualifying sessions, while this example was reserved primarily for races.
Villeneuve wore this helmet during three of the four Grands Prix he entered that season. It was first seen during winter testing before appearing at the opening race of the year in South Africa, where Villeneuve qualified third but completed only six laps. He wore it again in Brazil, qualifying an impressive second before retiring 29 laps into the race.
The helmet was worn for the final time at the San Marino Grand Prix, where Villeneuve appeared set to claim victory. With no serious threat from the other teams, Ferrari looked certain to secure a first and second-place finish. However, Villeneuve’s teammate, Didier Pironi, ignored the instruction to hold position and passed a deliberately slowing Villeneuve at a stage when he could no longer reclaim the lead. Villeneuve was denied what many believed should have been his rightful victory.
This helmet represents the final podium and final race of one of Formula 1’s most iconic and beloved drivers.
